Have you heard of dry needling? With a very straightforward title, dry needling is the process of inserting “dry” needles without medication through the skin and into certain muscle areas.

At Premier Physical Therapy, our dry needling specialist Kt Biri, DPT uses this technique to promote self-healing in patients. The process can help to naturally decrease inflammation, improve blood flow and inhibit pain throughout the body.

Our patients often worry if this technique may be right for them. Our philosophy is that anybody can benefit from dry needling as long as they do not have any contraindications to the treatment. Contraindications can include cancer, pregnancy, and bloodborne pathogens. Like any treatment, some people respond better to dry needling than others.

We consider this “another tool in the physical therapy tool belt.” Dry needling is a complementary treatment that can help in coordination with other physical therapy treatments. It is a great option for people who have a soft tissue injury who have not been responding to other treatments. It is especially great for soft tissue injuries in areas where there is not great blood supply, such as the Achilles tendon or the meniscus. Other circumstances that it can be beneficial in are TMJ dysfunction and migraines.

Most of our patients notice an effect after their first or second dry needling treatment. Many Premier patients have benefited from it, from migraine relief to reduced muscle pain. See what one of our recent patients had to say about their experience.

“Physical therapy has been a lot of help to me — especially with migraines, tight shoulders. Dry needling and strong massages help so much with migraine pain…”

— Emily, Premier Patient
