As we enter breast cancer awareness month, patients may have questions regarding how therapy can help breast cancer patients and survivors. There are different ways physical therapy can positively affect your recovery when you are diagnosed with breast cancer or after recovery. A couple of benefits are gaining strength, relieving stress, gaining energy, and sleeping better. Patients with breast cancer may have many questions regarding lymphedema, de-conditioning, or quality of life problems.
Different ways therapy can address issues involved with breast cancer.
- Work to correct decreased range of motion, upper body weakness, or pain.
- Help reduce lymphedema swelling with massage and compression bandages.
- Provide a home exercise program for individualized needs.
- Address limitations with daily life such as dressing, eating, driving, and bathing.
- Scar and pain management near the incision site.
